Hi guys and gals, I just wanted to share something from my job. I did some testing on a diesel genset last week. This one is used on a locomotive and as far as gensets go, it's pretty small. It's only 16 liters, or 969 cubic inches. The horsepower numbers aren't going to impress you since we've all been reading about hellcats, but it will put out 650 hp all day long, and do it at 1900 rpm.

Those big 6" pipes are for the intercooler which is about 1/3 of the unit on top. The rest is the radiator.

We were doing some full output runs for about 10 minutes to get the pipes up to temperature. At one point they were above 1200F. In that top picture the reddish color is glowing metal and not just rust.

well 650@1900 rpm. Hp = torque x rpm/5252. So torque = (hp / rpm) x 5252 = 1800 ft lbs at 1900

So we can do burnouts with it?

Sure. The max torque is 2132 ft-lbs at 1400 rpm.

Here's the datasheet on the engine: http://deutz.com/live_deutz_pro…

Yes! but you wouldn't want to put this in your car. The engine itself weighs 2800 lbs, and the full genset weighs 11,000 lbs.

It's hard to put your hand near it! We actually had some accels mounted to the turbo for a few minutes. We used some ceramic isolators glued on with high temp rtv to protect them.

In the car? No, but I can stuff it into a fake rear of a dump truck for the baddest monster truck.

By baddest, I mean worst, because something tells me it wont jump, and a monster truck that can't jump is like a bike with no wheels.
